Balance 2026: cien victorias
2026 in review: a hundred wins
and a dry ending
The Dodgers ruled the West for six months and left October in four games. Both things are true, and the numbers explain how they fit together.
A hundred wins do not happen by accident. The Dodgers finished the regular season at 100-62, nine games clear of San Diego, and were the only team in the National League West to pass 95.
The run differential leaves no doubt
If one figure describes a team without depending on luck, it is the gap between what it scores and what it allows. The Dodgers finished at +201. The next best in the division was San Diego at +41.
That gap — almost five times over — says something stronger than the record: this was not a team that stumbled into close wins. It was, by some distance, the best in the West.
But not in the way you would expect
This is where the numbers get interesting. With 204 home runs and 801 runs, it is easy to picture an overwhelming offense. It was not quite that: the team hit .257 with a .762 OPS. Good figures, not spectacular ones.
What was exceptional sat on the other side. 600 runs allowed were the fewest in the whole division, 81 clear of San Diego's 681. With a 3.55 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP, this was a team that won above all by stopping the other side from scoring.
Put another way: the 2026 team did not overpower you, it smothered you.
October
By winning the division with one of the league's best records, the Dodgers skipped the wild card round and began in the division series. There they saw off Atlanta in four games (3-1), losing only the second.
The championship series against Milwaukee was the opposite: four games, four defeats. They never once led the series.
What stands
The temptation is to judge the year by its last four games. It is worth resisting, not for comfort but on the statistics: four games are a tiny sample next to 162, and the full-season run differential still describes a team clearly above its division.
That does not erase the exit. It only explains how a team can be the best in its division for six months and still go home in October: in a short series, the margin you have to spare across 162 games stops protecting you.
